The Argument Essay


After reading a single passage, you will be asked to form an argument on the validity of the passage’s ideas. This topic is similar to the synthesis essay in that it asks you to present an argument, but it differs by having only one source to read, instead of the multiple passages in the synthesis essay. Therefore, these two essays are classified as “argument” essays.

You’ll want to support your position with examples and ideas from the passage, and add appropriate evidence from your education and knowledge of the world’s events.


Read and mark the prompt (circling significant words/directions),Write a thesis statementWrite a set of complete topic sentences,List what you would use for evidence.


  1. Focus on what you have read, possibly listing the texts with a brief statement of what from that text would fit the question,
  2. Next, list what you may know from experiences that fit, especially what you know from other classes that can be included.
  3. Write a concluding sentence.
  4. Avoid personal experiences as much as possible (it’s acceptable for the introduction, though).
